Sammamish Trails Rocket Launch

Sixth Annual "Blast Off!" Cub Scout Model Rocketry Event
Saturday, October 6th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cub Scouts are "October's Guy" Flying High in the October Sky

You may have seen the movie October Sky that tells the story of boys who were inspired by the early space program to build their own model rockets.  One of them grew up to work at NASA and help reach the moon.

In that inspiring spirit, and to celebrate new Cubs and the current Scouts who have helped with recruiting, the Sammamish Trails District and Northwest Scouters will host a model rocket launch at 60 Acres Park in Redmond on Saturday, October 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  With 10 launch pads controlled from a single range-control console, we will have both a steady stream of flights and the highest safety standards in force.

All Cub Scouts and their families are welcome to attend. For those who already have model rockets, we look forward to seeing the rockets you will bring to fly. Packs and dens may want to make a project of building model rockets to fly at this event. For those who do not have rockets ready for this event, Northwest Scouters will have on hand a loaner fleet of ready-to-fly model rockets. These rockets, or an engine to fly a Cub's existing rocket, will be available at $2.00 per flight.

There are special incentives for new Cub Scouts and for existing Cubs who bring a buddy to this event or have brought in a new Cub this fall. These Cub Scouts will get their first three flights (their rocket or one of our loaners) for free. How can you get to participate in this "Free Flight"? Here are three ways:

  1. Be a newly signed-up Cub Scout (recruited since April of this year)
  2. Sign up at the launch to join Cub Scouts.
  3. Be an existing Cub Scout and bring a buddy who signs up.

We will not have food or drink concessions this year, so packs may want to plan this as a Family Day outing and bring their own lunch and beverage choices.  Please be prepared to Leave No Trace and carry away all your trash.

60 Acres Park is on NE 116th between Willows Road and Redmond-Woodinville Road. We will be on the flying field on the south side of 116th, which is accessed from the parking lot east of the field. The park has soccer fields on the north side of 116th; you can also park there and walk across 116th to the flying field.

More information on this event, on model rocket building, and on where to buy supplies is available from George Christ at georgec@nwscouters.org or at 425-869-8442.  George has been a model rocket flyer since his Cub Scout days, spent 13 years with NASA and has organized youth rocketry events since the 1980s.

Please come out to launch with us!
